Figueres, the capital of the Alt Empordà, is located 136 km north of Barcelona. It boasts the surrealist Salvador Dalí's Theatre-Museum. Buyers from all over the county meet in the outdoor traditional markets. The city has the largest 18th century fortress in Europe, the castle of Sant Ferran.
Salvador Dalí lived all over the world, but he was born and died in Figueres. He was buried on the 25th of January 1989 in the crypt of his Theatre-Museum, where he spent the last five years of his life. The Teatre Municipal de Figueres was built in the middle of the 19th century, but it was destroyed by a fire during the Spanish Civil War. Dalí decided in 1961 that the old ruined theatre would be his museum and the most surrealist object in the world: enormous eggs, bread on the façade and a transparent dome. The collection includes works from all his periods, original creations, a collection of jewellery and many works by artists who Dalí admired. A visit to the Dalí Theatre-Museum is a unique opportunity to get an insight into the mind and work of one of the most important geniuses of the 20th century.
The original Museu de la Joguina de Catalunya with more than 4,000 objects and the Museu de l'Empordà are also in Figueres. If you want to relax, there is nothing better than walking on the Rambla and looking its Baroque, Neoclassical and Modernista buildings. Fairs and markets take place here all year round. The castle of Sant Ferran watches over the city from a hillock.
