Basilica of Santa Maria de Mataró

The basilica was built on the site of a Roman temple and a later Gothic building. The base of the bell tower survives today. It was designed by the Milanese architect Ercole Torelli in 1675, and wasn't completed until 1737.

Inside the basilica you'll find a spectacular Byzantine-style dome in the main nave, underpinned by a series of Corinthian pillars. Among the works of art inside the ensemble, we highlight the frescoes in the chapel of the Dolors by Antoni Viladomat, the leading baroque Catalan painter of his day, and the interventions of the modernista interior designer Enric Monserdà in the chapel of the Santíssim. He was a relation of the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who also hailed from Mataró. The organ, which is located above the main entrance to the basilica, dates from 1927. It is 12 metres high and weighs 20 tonnes, making it the biggest in Catalonia.

A basilica that invites us to discover the rich architectural heritage of the surrounding area from the heart of the town of Mataró. Near the basilica, you can take a pleasant stroll and admire a series of modernista houses, most of them designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who was born in the town.

The monastery was placed on the list of Cultural Assets of National Interest (BCIN) by the Catalan government in 1998.
