Barcelona, City of the Literature

  • Barcelona Ciutat de la literatura UNESCO

Welcome to Barcelona, a UNESCO City of Literature since 2015, which has a very special connection with the world of books. Many writers have been born here, have lived here and been welcomed, bringing the city to life through the eyes of their characters. Many parts of the city have featured in great novels. Barcelona has established itself as the capital of the publishing industry in Catalan and Spanish. It has more than three hundred bookshops, a network of forty public libraries with specialised collections, and every year it hosts literary festivals, fairs, book awards and events. Given such a background, it comes as no surprise that one of the most popular celebrations is Sant Jordi, the day of books and roses.

Sant Jordi is possibly the most eagerly awaited day in Barcelona. The city has a special atmosphere. Saint Jordi, or Saint George, is the patron saint of Catalonia, and the streets and squares of Barcelona are crammed with stalls selling books and roses, authors taking part in book signings and people giving each other flowers and books.
