Barcelona, City of the Literature
Welcome to Barcelona, a UNESCO City of Literature since 2015, which has a very special connection with the world of books. Many writers have been born here, have lived here and been welcomed, bringing the city to life through the eyes of their characters. Many parts of the city have featured in great novels. Barcelona has established itself as the capital of the publishing industry in Catalan and Spanish. It has more than three hundred bookshops, a network of forty public libraries with specialised collections, and every year it hosts literary festivals, fairs, book awards and events. Given such a background, it comes as no surprise that one of the most popular celebrations is Sant Jordi, the day of books and roses.
Would you like to read Barcelona? You are in a city that is a major publishing hub, with a population of avid readers and which is the setting for books and novels whose authors tell you about the city from a variety of viewpoints. A UNESCO City of Literature.
We invite you to be the star of a fascinating story. Barcelona's charisma has made it the protagonist of great novels. Writers from Spain and abroad have brought the city to life through the eyes of their main characters. A different way of discovering Barcelona!
Comics, children's books, art and foreign languages: Barcelona's specialist bookshops
A carefully curated selection of books, a bookshop with personality or a passionate bookseller behind the counter, are some of the trademarks of specialist bookshops. If you're a book lover, you know the score: finding a bookshop that caters to every need is like finding a hidden treasure.
Barcelona hosts a great many cultural events and festivals throughout the year, showcasing music, dance, theatre and, of course, literature. Here's Barcelona's yearly calendar of literary events to keep you up to date with what's happening.
Collection of illustrations and solidarity roses
A celebration as beloved as Sant Jordi has its own visual identity every year. Turisme de Barcelona publishes a different illustration of Saint Jordi (Saint George) and the rose to mark this special day, and we have put them all together for you to collect. You can download them to use as a bookmark or as a screen background on your computer, mobile device or tablet.
Sant Jordi, UNESCO World Book Day
Sant Jordi is possibly the most eagerly awaited day in Barcelona. The city has a special atmosphere. Saint Jordi, or Saint George, is the patron saint of Catalonia, and the streets and squares of Barcelona are crammed with stalls selling books and roses, authors taking part in book signings and people giving each other flowers and books. This festival is hard to explain. You have to experience it for yourself!
